Space Jockey (collage) by sivousplay Space Jockey (collage) by sivousplay
Here's my take on a very cool bust from Apikitt based on the film Prometheus. I went w/ more golden colors to channel some original Alien colors for the Space Jockey and tried to accentuate the alien depicted on the mural in the "vials room." As always, hand painted with mostly Vallejo acrylics. If you'd like to see more pictures, please visit my site: sivousplay.net/html/engineer.h…
Cheers,
jim

Another one so soon? Nice!

Another really nice bit of work. I especially like the color work you did on the suit.

On a less related note, I always found it strange that the helmet for the Space Jockey has such a insect like look to it, while the head underneath is so drastically not. Of course, taking into account how advanced the Engineers are, and the fact that what looks like an insect to us may be something entirely different to them, maybe it's not so odd?

Sorry for the rambling, but it was just something that occurred to me. ^^;

But now it will be a while before another piece shows up ... I have a lot of prep to do on the next pieces ... probably 3-4 weeks at the minimum before I have any more pics

Thanks for the kind words ... I actually painted them at the same time ... just wanted to be a drama queen and post them separately :)

About the engineers/space jockey ... space jockey was created a LONG time ago and I guess the Prometheus folks decided to go w/ something that was mostly human looking to fit w/ the dna/creator ideas and just had to keep the space jockey armor for backwards consistency.

Very true. More then likely that was the decision for it. But I actually meant it from the context of in universe. So, say NASA deciding to build a new space suit, and it looking like that.

I can't help but wonder if it was an aesthetic choice, or buy design? Or even if, considering they are bio-engineers, the suits are partly organic, and once they seeded Earth, part of that somehow got into the mix? So as a result insects inherited aspects of the suit?

or giger was just being creepy and we got what we got :)

But to your point, it seems he liked the notion of human/insect/alien combinations as is evidenced in his artwork and the original Alien(s) movies had these insect-like things using humans as their host. Not unreasonable to believe that the creator of both those insect-things and humans would also have some insect-like (and human-like) anatomy and thus the space jockey proboscis.

Wow!! You really took it to another level with this bust. The realism on the face is amazing and I really like the golden approach you went with on the chair suit. It gives the Engineer a more noble appearance. The oozing vials look phenomenal as well as the surrounding details, but the xenomorph mural really steals this piece with that awesome glow. One of your best works so far in my opinion!

Thank you so much ... your comment completely sums up what I was trying to achieve with this piece. I'm not normally a big fan of busts, but this one really stood out.

Very welcome. I can't agree with you more, rarely have I come across a bust as amazingly detailed and executed as this one.

www.threekingsresin.com/ has some very nice products as well.

Often when creating busts the main figure of the bust is fine, but they tend to clutter up the base w/ all sorts of nonsense to create "atmosphere" and it just seems out of place. I have thought about some of the three kings pieces ... just have never pulled the trigger.

Very true and is one of the main reasons I like the Apikitt Engineer bust. The base has lots of incredible details, while not being too cluttered and complementing the overall piece. Even the amazing way you painted the mural, it definitely pops but doesn't overshadow the Engineer.
